Abstract

Objective:To describe the age distribution, clinical-periodontal status, and frequency of systemic comorbidities in a pilot cohort of postpartum women with preterm birth treated at the Regional Hospital of Coronel Oviedo during 2022 Methodology: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted on 15 immediate postpartum women (<48 hours postpartum) with a confirmed diagnosis of preterm birth (<37 weeks). Periodontal status was assessed via full-mouth clinical probing, and sociodemographic and systemic variables were recorded. Results: The study population was characterized by its young age, with 66.7% of cases concentrated in the 15 to 25-year age range. A periodontal disease prevalence of 80% was detected, categorized into localized (53.3%) and generalized (26.7%) periodontitis. Only 6.7% exhibited gingival health. Notably, 33.3% of the sample presented with concomitant preeclampsia. Conclusion: An alarming prevalence of destructive periodontitis exists among young postpartum women in Coronel Oviedo with preterm births. The findings suggest a clinically relevant association between oral infection, preeclampsia, and prematurity in this local population, underscoring the urgent need for prenatal dental care protocols in the region.
